The Smokes, Matt Slater (drums and vocals) and Himes Alexander (guitar and vocals) combine social commentary with garage rock, psych and soul in just the right ratio. Frantic grunts and howls co-mingle with pretty and gritty melodies and harmonies to float above an upbeat heavy explosion of energized noise. They sound like The Sonics, Wilson Picket and the Buzzcocks, with an eclectic style worthy of sharing stages with a range of acts from C Average, Xurs to Rammonda Hammer and Death Valley Girls.
The Smokes formed in Spokane Wa, in 2014 and fought to define their sound and influences over the years. Since relocating to the Twin Cities in 2017, the Smokes have released an E.P., "Backlash" that more clearly defines their sound and collective voice. The Smokes' undeniably raw and authentic recorded vibe is only intensified during their live shows which leave fans sweaty and satisfied with each experience.
