LOCATION:Ruth Foundation for the Arts\, 325 W Florida St\, Milwaukee\, WI 53204\, United States
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ruth Arts for their first Happiest Hour of 2025 — a monthly open house with special guests and complimentary snacks! This month features A Celebration of Risograph: a mini book fair and zinefest organized by BearBear and Cactus+ in the studio, showcasing Risograph art book presses, artists, and community groups from across the country. Meet the artists and presses behind the work, all while enjoying cocktails courtesy of She Was a Public House and tamales and treats provided by Las 7 Estrellas Mexican Restaurant. You can visit our current exhibition, Benny Andrews: Trouble, from 12–7 pm. At 4 pm, a special exhibition tour will be led by Markasa Tucker-Harris from the African American Roundtable (AART). The presentation will highlight aspects of Andrews’ advocacy work and practice connecting to the work of AART. All are welcome, and reservations are not required. COLLABORATORS The African American Roundtable (AART) is a nonprofit organization focused on serving Milwaukee’s Black community and centers its work around the theme of Black liberation while fostering joyful, interconnected communities. Executive Director Markasa Tucker-Harris joined AART a decade ago as a member to further the grassroots efforts of the family of Dontre Hamilton after he was murdered in 2014 by a Milwaukee police officer. Deepening her engagement with the community, Tucker-Harris became co-chair of the African American Roundtable in 2016 and stepped into the role of executive director in 2021. Her love and passion for people and justice grounds her work as she helps to lead a coalition of community leaders and organizations focused on improving civic engagement and organizing people to build power. BearBear is a Milwaukee-based, self-publishing risograph studio established in 2019 by Diana Chu and Benjamin Grzenia. Cactus+ is a nonprofit organization with an artist-centered model for multimedia arts education and community building that champions accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability. Cactus+ is partnered with Cactus Club, an artist-run, queer-owned, multi-disciplinary arts and performance space in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood. She Was A Public House is an ongoing social practice project and pop-up bar started by artist Molly Hassler and completed by all of the patrons of their nomadic dive.
