Silver Fern

(Huntsville, Al)
Genre: Emo, Shoegaze

Silver Fern is a 4-piece band from Huntsville, Alabama. The project is based on the songwriting of singer and guitarist Shannon Whaley. Shannon’s songwriting output began with fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing and earnest folk-tinged melodies. Over time the sound has evolved into something more ambitious in terms of sound and arrangement, but with the directness and honesty of the original songwriting intact. The steady bass and drums provide the backbone for layers of echoing slide guitar, and Fripp and Eno-esque pedalboard looping. The sound has been described as dream pop, prog, shoegaze, bedroom pop, folk, post rock, slow-core, etc. Silver Fern presents an eclectic synthesis of all these elements, particularly in live sets sprinkled with covers ranging from UK trip-hop pioneers Portishead to Brazilian songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim. The band features members of Camping In Alaska, Obed Edom, Glimpse, and Human Labor. Their self-titled 5 song Silver Fern EP was released on Bandcamp and streaming services in 2019. The follow-up full length album is currently being mixed/mastered and will be released in 2023.
