Bad Moves

(Washington, DC)
Genre: Garage Rock

When people sing together, is it necessarily cathartic? Is catharsis necessarily rejuvenating? And what if the aftermath of catharsis turns out to be the same old frustration? With their third LP, Washington, D.C.’s Bad Moves have expanded their founding artistic identity — a candy-coated guitar-pop shell surrounding a bitter lyrical core — by refracting their ideas through a new set of musical forms that weaponize repetition. On the new Wearing Out the Refrain, Bad Moves propose that the flip side of the delirious harmony of the basement show singalong is the volatile, accusatory antiphony of a community divided by strain, shouting the same desperate hook back and forth at one another.

Barely Civil

(Milwaukee, WI)
Genre: Emo, Indie Rock
I’ll Figure This Out, Barely Civil’s sophomore full-length, offers temporary solutions to this existential concern. With Chris Teti (TWIABP, Fiddlehead) joining as producer, the band’s massive live energy translates into concise, yet expansive arrangements. “Box for My Organs” slams sonic triumph against plainspoken self-doubt. Grief and guilt are on the same plane in “Bottom of the Lake,” while the band contemplates the sustainability of burning their twenties at both ends on “The Worst Part of December.”

“I feel like our music revolves around the process of analyzing who we are and where we come from,” Erickson explains. “Possibly, even, where we belong.” I’ll Figure This Out attempts to answer those questions while turning completely inward. It’s a darker chapter in a constantly evolving discography. The only way out, it seems, is through.

Breakup Tour

(Milwaukee, WI)
Genre: Indie Rock

Breakup Tour is a Milwaukee-based bubble grunge supergroup formed by four friends over the 2020 pandemic.

The band includes Nat Otto [Man Random] on drums, Sam Schrader [Bureaucratic Drift] on guitar, D.H. Thomas [The Unitaskers] on guitar and omnichord, and Amy Upthagrove [June Gloom, Beach Static, Intolerable Swill] on bass. All four of them sing and scream and write the songs. Their first collection of recordings is imminent and full of bangers each and every one.
