An autumn block party uplifting the intersections of music, community causes & seasonal treats

What’s Beet Street?

A collaborative neighborhood block party started in 2016 to celebrate the season with live music performances from local and international artists, delicious food and drink, unique learning opportunities and activities with a few dozen citywide organizations and a maker’s market. Rain or shine, Beet Street takes place the first Saturday of October from 1pm-7pm. The family-friendly celebration takes over the block of S. Wentworth Ave. between Potter (Goodkind) and Russell (Cactus). Started by Cactus Club, Goodkind and Palomino!

We welcome musicians from around the world to perform

W.I.T.C.H.

A groundbreaking Zambian psychedelic act, W.I.T.C.H. (an acronym for We
Intend to Cause Havoc) emerged during the post-independence movement in the 1970s. They are the hallmark of Zamrock, a genre characterized by fuzzed out guitars and lofi vocals that fuses African polyrhythms, Western garage rock and funk.

W.I.T.C.H.’s 1972 debut, Introduction, was the first commercial album released by a
Zambian band. In the 21st century, crate diggers interested in idiosyncratic global psych helped to revitalize the band. A 2011 reissue brought the band to a new generation of listeners, and W.I.T.C.H. reunited to tour in 2014. In 2023, they released Zango, their first new album of new material in almost 40 years. It is an honor to host these legends!

Automatic make deviant pop music that cuts through the brainrot. Balancing irreverence with sharp commentary, the L.A. band approached their third album with a dark sense of humor and a renewed sense of momentum. Izzy Glaudini (synths, vocals) and Halle Saxon (bass, vocals) believe messages of change land best with a backbeat and a cheeky groove – and on their new album Is It Now?, they ask us to confront the world’s oppressive structures with fresh urgency. Unsparing in their critique – of automated warfare (‘mq9’), mindless consumerism (‘Is It Now?’), and the political influence of oil (‘The Prize’) – Is It Now? also offers ways forward: dancing, resisting, coming together, falling in love. Like its title, the album doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but it might inspire better questions – or at least get you dancing yourself awake while searching.
