Andrew Fitzpatrick and Jon Mueller previously shared the stage as members of the group Volcano Choir. As Friend, the duo explore a new direction, using acoustic drums, percussion and synthesis to create rhythmic, textural and thought-provoking work that shares elements of folk music in its performance and modern electronic music in its sound.
Andrew Fitzpatrick is a musician from Madison, Wisconsin. As a member of the bands Bon Iver, Volcano Choir, and All Tiny Creatures, he has recorded and performed extensively, including appearances at venues and festivals such as the Sydney Opera House and Montreux Jazz Festival. He has collaborated with many artists in many contexts, and has produced a body of solo work that incorporates synthesizers, guitars, field recordings, samplers, and electronic processing.
Renowned percussionist and drummer Jon Mueller is celebrated for his uncommon technique, rigor and virtuosity. Notable solo performances have taken place at the Guggenheim Museum, New Museum, Issue Project Room, SXSW, Big Ears Festival, Hopscotch Fest and Witching Hour Festival. Beyond his solo work, Mueller has performed and recorded with Olivia Block, Who is the Witness?, Mind Over Mirrors, Volcano Choir, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Pele.
Chants & Dave Schoepke recently released their all-drums debut album “Speleogenesis” on Maloca Records (Belgium). The duo blend live drumming with dub techniques and dancefloor-informed production, guided by imagery of a subterranean world. It’s a full-circle moment, as the two met when Chants (aka Jordan Cohen) took drum lessons from Schoepke during his teenage years.
Chants is a Madison-based producer and drummer with releases on The Trilogy Tapes, Astral Plane Recordings, Impossible City Records, and more. His work explores the intersection of organic textures and electronic techniques, and is informed rhythmically & sonically by the dancefloor even when not aiming at it explicitly. His previous album “Gurum Triads”, a collaboration with London musician Dane Law, was released on Will Bankhead’s label The Trilogy Tapes.
Dave Schoepke (Milwaukee) is a uniquely admired and respected drummer and percussionist whose wide-ranging approach always puts meaning and substance ahead of virtuosity. In addition to being an in-demand session and touring drummer, he records and performs solo percussion music that stands out for its warmth, touch, and melodic approach. His most recent album is Sun Will Follow.
