New Land Broken Road • Turn Left Turn Right

NEW LAND BROKEN ROAD

Cambodia/Malaysia | 2018 | 15 min

DIRECTED BY KAVICH NEANG

Phnom Penh at night. Three young hip-hop dancers drive a single motorbike and stop on a muddy deserted road. Nick leaves the others to look for an iPhone he heard was lost in the area. Piseth and Thy discuss their hopes and doubts, and Piseth shows his best Michael Jackson moves. They meet Leakhena, a young female street vendor whose cart is full of colors.

TURN LEFT TURN RIGHT

Cambodia/USA/South Korea | 2016 | 68 min

DIRECTED BY DOUGLAS SEOK

Kanitha, a young, free-spirited Cambodian woman in her 20s, lives in modern-day Phnom Penh, working multiple jobs and choosing to live how she pleases. However, her daydreaming creates tension with her traditional mother, who wants a daughter that will settle down to get married, and Kanitha seems ambivalent to her father’s deteriorating health. The family’s struggle seems immutable, but Kanitha dreams an idea born from memories of her father. TURN LEFT TURN RIGHT is structured as an album, with tracks and sounds influencing the form. The film weaves Cambodian rock songs together with motifs of family, nature, and boundless imagination.

Anti-Archive

Anti-Archive is a Cambodian film production company created in January 2014 by Davy CHOU, Steve CHEN, and Kavich NEANG. In 2016, PARK Sungho joined as a partner, and in 2020, Daniel MATTES joined as a fifth partner.

Anti-Archive produces and co-produces fiction and documentary films by the emerging, new generation of Cambodian filmmakers, as well as films by international, independent directors shooting in Cambodia. Deliberately provocative, the name Anti-Archive invites one to rethink the relationship of films and filmmakers with the past and history.

Davy Chou and Steve Chen met in Phnom Penh in 2009, when they were each developing their own film projects. Steve Chen worked on the production of GOLDEN SLUMBERS, and in 2012 directed and produced the Cambodian feature film DREAM LAND with support from Davy Chou.

The company recognized the need for a structure of film production in Cambodia to support young independent filmmakers, some of whom have since shown their first works internationally.
