Social Cinema

(Wichita, KS // Lincoln, NE)
Genre: Alternative, Indie

Social Cinema is a new band with over a decade of history. More accurately, Social Cinema is the latest chapter in a decade-plus friendship and artistic journey evolving alongside the people behind the music.

When three Wichita friends, Austin Engler and brothers Griffin and Logan Bush formed Kill Vargas in 2013 as young teenagers, they couldn’t have guessed that they’d all be still performing together a decade later. Along the way, the trio would cross paths with Nebraskan band, Death Cow, featuring Mari Crisler and Reed Tiwald. Between sharing bills and sleeping on each other’s couches after shows while on the Midwest DIY scene grind, the three and two would become inseparably close, and eventually join forces as five in 2021, under the new name Social Cinema.

Whether it’s due to their years as touring musicians, gradually honed songwriting and stylistic ambitions from scrappy, garage-y roots, or some combination of all of the above, Social Cinema makes an immediate impression with seasoned beyond their years songwriting chops and a road-hardened work ethic and resolve to match. Since adopting the Social Cinema banner in 2021, the alternative/indie rock quintet has issued three EPs — 2022’s Causing Scenes and Repeat and Get Along in 2023 — and a number of singles highlighting the outfit’s multifaceted songcraft prowess, and has shared bills with the likes of Metric, Saint Motel, Bad Bad Hats and more.

After releasing Get Along in Spring 2023, Social Cinema is gearing up to share its next EP and second to debut in 2023. Titled Stay Numb, the three-track release continues Social Cinema’s adoption of professional studio polish, this time bringing that refinement to the direct, galvanizing punch of the band’s garage rock roots. Spanning territories that range from anthemic power-pop on the opener and title track, “Stay Numb,” to the heavy, feedback-laden riffs and grooves of “On Time,” this latest chapter in Social Cinema’s journey is a celebration of the sounds and scenes that got each of its five members to where they are today. Whereas Get Along showcased the quintet’s ambitions to bring its sound to new, more stylistically dynamic, and fresh territories, Stay Numb is a loud and proud assertion of the band’s DIY ethos and the wallop of its no-frills rock roots not only intact, but stronger than ever.

Sego

(Los Angeles, CA)
Genre: Art Punk, Indie, Pop

“Art-Punk by non-punk non-artists”—Utah bred and LA based, Sego first caught the attention of LA tastemakers with their penchant for avant-garde grooves helming indie-pop hooks. Since its genesis, Sego’s prolific output and experimental live shows have garnered all the accolades modern indie bands dream of—critical praise from NPR, European tours, festival spots
at Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits, and a national (Xfinity) commercial airing on the Olympics and the Super Bowl.
Living and recording together out of their downtown LA warehouse, Sego (Spencer, Thomas, Derv, and Kathleen) has just started releasing tunes from their 3rd forthcoming full-length album. This offering expands upon their pop sensibilities and thematic musings while boasting all the resistance and intelligence that makes them the most compelling art-punks in the scene.

Alley Eyes

(MIlwaukee, WI)
Genre: Indie Rock, Punk

MKE indie sleaze – Alley Eyes have emerged as a vibrant force in modern indie rock. Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and drawing inspiration from groups such as The Strokes, The Killers, and The Beaches – the band’s anthemic rock sound is reminiscent of the early-aughts.

Kat and the Hurricane

(Madison, WI)
Genre: Indie, Pop

Kat and the Hurricane is an all-queer and trans synth rock/indie-pop band from Madison, WI composed of guitarist/vocalist Kat Rhapsody (they/them), keyboardist/vocalist Benjamin Rose (they/them), and drummer Alex Nelson (they/them). The band has stirred up a storm across the Midwest since 2017 thanks to their energetic live shows, strong sense of community, and genre-defying songwriting. While preparing their debut full length album, Got It Out, the trio has appeared at several regional and national festivals, completed 3 regional and national tours, and received the coveted Artist of The Year award from their local Madison Area Music Association.

Got It Out, released in October 2024, represents a new high in Kat and the Hurricane’s craft of catharsis. Seamlessly weaving elements of synth rock, pop punk, indie-pop, alternative rock, indie-folk, and hip-hop across ten tracks, the band speaks to the growing pains of mental health and trauma healing. From the raucous stadium rock anthem, “Therapy,” high-energy pop-punk confessional “Caffeine & Alcohol,” and lush indie-pop closer, “Smoke,” Kat and the Hurricane illustrates how, even with some healing and a lot of getting it out, pain never truly goes away – it simply shifts.

When asked what it means to be visible as an all-queer band, Kat and the Hurricane express gratitude at being able to be the representation they needed when they were younger, citing the challenges openly LGBTQ+ artists have endured in decades past. Yet, while the band is proud to show up for their queer and trans fanbase, their genre-fluid music touches the ears and hearts of many. Drawing on varied influences from 2000s pop/rock (The Killers, Walk the Moon, Paramore, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World) to today’s sapphic music legends (Tegan & Sara, girl in red, MUNA, Chappell Roan), the new album explores themes of mental health, healing, and learning to love who you are – themes that anyone can relate to.
