Launched in Fall 2025, Take One is a free, semester-long youth filmmaking program that introduces teens to fundamentals of visual storytelling, video production, editing and art collaboration. Through hands-on workshops, students learn to develop ideas, operate equipment, and produce their own short films in an artist-powered, supportive, and inclusive environment.

The goal is to impart students with an understanding of many elements of the filmmaking process, find what areas of filmmaking interest them the most, make professional connections in the filmmaking community (locally and nationally/internationally), and build confidence as emerging filmmakers. The class accommodates 30 students each semester and registration is free to all.

Take One grows young creative talent across Milwaukee, connects students to broader communities of their interest and celebrates a culture of symbiotic arts education. Providing free equipment and educational resources, this youth program transforms student experiences and expands arts accessibility in the city.

Enrollment for the Fall 2026 course is now open!

Please note that the application to enroll does not guarantee admission into the program. Depending on the number of applicants, there will be a selection process to ensure that we are serving students from across the city. A plurality of zip codes will inform this process.

Fall/winter 2025 Student Film Screening:

Meet our fall 2025 instructors:

Diya Mark (they/them)

Diya Gitanjali Mark is a cinematographer, filmmaker and multimedia visual artist currently based in Milwaukee, WI. They are the winner of the Cream City Jury Award at the Milwaukee Film Festival 2022 and a recipient of the Gener8or x Sherman Phoenix Artist Grant in 2024. They are committed to creating meaningful and visually stunning work.

In their creative practice, they are interested in exploring the ways we process trauma through abstraction. They are particularly drawn to the Horror and Science Fiction genres, as they have historically been vehicles for the harder to talk about, stickier sides of humanity. They are also interested in humanity and love, and the intersections between all of these things.

Britany Gunderson (she/they)

Britany Gunderson is a filmmaker and artist living in Milwaukee, WI. Her practice involves creating moving image work that uses material forms such as textiles and celluloid film to investigate personal histories through process-based experimentation and direct intervention.

Gunderson received a Jury Award from the Milwaukee Film Festival. Her films have exhibited internationally at venues such as Saigon Experimental Film Festival, Festival Tous Courts, and Stockholm Experimental Film Festival. Gunderson received a BFA in Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
