SapSap is proud to present “Rivers Run Deep,” a commemorative event marking the 50th anniversary of Laotians arriving in the United States. This milestone will be celebrated alongside the Lao New Year festivities on April 12, at the Cactus Club in Bay View, WI, from 3-8 PM. The event will focus on the profound cultural contributions of the Laotian and Hmong communities, particularly within Milwaukee.

The name “Rivers Run Deep” is inspired by the Mekong River — a lifeline for our people, carrying us through the pain of war to a new beginning. For many Laotians, crossing the Mekong was more than just a physical journey; it was a path toward safety, hope, and survival. The river became a symbol of resilience and a bridge between our past and future, carrying with it the stories of those who made the journey toward a new life.

We were the new misfits. Arriving in a land where we were often unseen, we found refuge in a culture that embraced transformation and self-expression. In the rhythm and energy of the streets, we discovered a space to voice our struggles and dreams. Here, among the Black and Brown communities that welcomed us, we found our voice in the art of breaking.

Breaking wasn’t just a way to fit into a new world; it became our way of carving out space for ourselves. It was a means of identifying who we were, a vehicle to express the struggles within and the resilience that defined us. We weren’t simply part of a cultural movement — we helped shape it. Together with those who understood the power of overcoming adversity, we became catalysts for change. Breaking became more than movement; it was a language, a reflection of our spirit, strength, and the beauty that arises when we face challenges and create something new together.

Food has been just as important as breaking in our journey. It’s a universal language that has always been a bridge between people, a way to share stories, build connections, and break down the barriers of unfamiliarity. The flavors and traditions of our Laotian cuisine carry the same power as movement, offering not only a taste of home but an opportunity for conversation. In sharing our food, we invite others into our world, allowing them to experience the richness of our culture, one bite at a time. Food, like breaking, offers a way to connect, express, and build a community.

We didn’t just blend in — we added something uniquely our own. In building a community of expression, unity, and creativity, we found belonging. Through breaking and through food, we found spaces where we could redefine ourselves and, in doing so, contribute something meaningful to the cultural landscape.

The day will begin with a sacred Baci Ceremony, a spiritual blessing to honor our ancestors and set intentions for the future. Following the ceremony, we’ll gather for a panel featuring Laotians, Hmong, and other artists — those who welcomed us, those who have shaped the culture alongside us, and those who continue to stand with us. To close the celebration, a breaking battle will showcase the fusion of Southeast Asian influences and the creativity that emerged from this vibrant community. Throughout the day, SapSap will be selling food, offering the flavors of our heritage and the taste of home.

Rivers Run Deep celebrates the deep connections between the Laotian, Hmong, Black, and Brown communities in Milwaukee. It reflects the strength of immigrant and refugee communities, who, though often marginalized, have shaped this city with resilience, creativity, and unity. This event is a chance to honor our journeys, the positive contributions we’ve made, and the cultural fabric we’ve woven together. We are the storytellers, the artists, the ones who, through culture, food, and spirit, have helped shape the heart of this city.
