Join us July 15th 1Pm-3Pm for our Youth Art show, by teens for teens. This event will feature lots of creative young artists showcasing musical talents, films, and displayed visual art! Curated by Moving Image Intern, Nati Rodriguez.

Cactus Club walls will be filled with displayed art from our Milwaukee born Static Art Collective! Static Art Collective is a teen lead and founded collective sharing spaces and experiences for youth of all kind to share art, talents and expression! Static Art Collective consists of punk cool teens Nati Rodriguez, Eliana Idzikowski, and Lyla Salinas.

Music will be played by Marquette High School students, Sandwich! Sandwich is a Milwaukee band made up of Luke Murray (Vocals, Guitar), Isaac Visser (Keys), Bobby Walsh (Saxophone), Kue Xiong (Bass), and Xander Gibbons (Drums). The band plays a mix of fusion, rock and funk.

Static Art Collective

Static Art Collective is a youth led collective that focuses on developing events and opportunities for young artists in Milwaukee. It consists of three Milwaukee teens, Nati Rodriguez, Eliana Idzikowski and Lyla Salinas. Static Art Collective strives for equal creative opportunities for BIPOC and queer youth as they host Youth Art Shows throughout the year for the greater Milwaukee community.

The Happening

Puberty and the uneasy feelings of growing up as a woman, such as sexualization, objectification, and obvious physical developmental changes create stress, shock, and trauma. Despite the universal nature of ¨The Happening,¨ it often wreaks shame. In this short film I used symbols of growing up and entering adulthood to explore this change. A girl is exposed to a spiraling image on the television, which serves as a form of propaganda or influence. After seeing this, her teeth fall out. She buries her freshly fallen teeth to hide her shame and they begin to grow into money plants. The money is associated with the tooth fairy as well as the transition into capitalism as a young adult. Her parents harvest these quarters and feed them to her, which represents the selling of youth into the ideas of capitalism. The target-like spiral begins to take form on her own body, which represents the sexualization that happens as girls' bodies start to change, as well as the physical trauma of puberty. She tears open her stomach to find a pre-happening version of herself that has refused to separate from her. Humiliated that her younger self is still visible, she buries her with apples--a religious symbol that indicates the standards of womanhood--in order to hide her shame and comply with the ideal image society expects of her. This attempt to bury herself transforms the smaller version of her into a snake, which crawls up her throat. The shame-ridden snake version of herself slithers from her mouth, lashing out. Its hissing turns to a soft ¨shhhhh¨ which silences her authentic self and forces her to conceal the shame that continues to grow.

Grapes. directed by Sophie Hatton. After a self imposed isolation from all their friends, Thea attempts to reenter the grasps of her friend group only to find things are no longer as they were. A bundle of green spherical fruits fall from her ear, wine spills as friendships fail to resume.

Soles of Childhood, Katie Hyde, A girl chases the freedom and memories of her younger self. However, she soon realizes that it is not necessary to constantly yearn for those memories, but rather to allow them to find their place, enabling her to create new ones for the future.
